Luther Bynum Akins' Obituary
AKINS, LUTHER BYNUM age 89, of Garland, Texas, passed away suddenly on March 3, 2013, at the hospital. He was born on June 28, 1923, in McCaulley, Texas, to his parents, Martin and Beulah Mae. Bynum was one of 17 children born to the Akins family. He married Sybil Lea Means in Brownwood, Texas, on August 28, 1949. They had four children. He served in the Navy for three and a half years during World War II and later in the National Guard for three years. He attended Howard Payne College and graduated in 1949 with a degree in Biblical studies. He graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1953 with a degree in theology, and pastored churches in Texas. He was then commissioned by the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention for missionary work in Taiwan and served there for 28 years. He also served with the North American Mission Board and the Baptist General Convention of Texas in work with the Chinese. For the past 17 years he was a resident of Dallas County during which time he was a member of Northlake Baptist Church of Dallas. He enjoyed teaching the Bible, singing hymns, watching football and playing forty-two. Bynum will be remembered by his loving wife and their children, Barbara Akins of Garland, TX; Lee and Susan Akins of Rancho de Taos, NM; John and Michelle Akins of Richardson, TX; and Carol and Les Lunce of Woodbridge, VA. He is also survived by his grandchildren Lauren, Graham, Dana and David, his brother Ferris Akins, four sister-in-laws, and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation on Tuesday March 5, From 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM ar Restland Funeral Home. Funeral service for Bynum will be at 11:00 AM, Wednesday March 6, 2013, at Northlake Baptist Church, 10110 McCree Road, Dallas, TX. Burial will follow at Restland Memorial Park. Donations in Bynum’s memory may be made to Northlake Baptist Church.
