Luther Travis Snell's Obituary
Luther Snell passed away April 20, 2015, in Dallas. Luther was born November 4, 1932 in Texarkana, Texas, the first of five children. In 1950, at the age of 17, he left Texarkana, enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS General W.A. Mann as a Machinist Mate Third Class during the Korean War. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Luther returned home to Texas, enrolled in East Texas Baptist College on the G.I. Bill., and majored in Choral Music. However, Luther’s life was set on a different path when he met Doris Jo Boothe. He followed her to her hometown of Dallas, upon her graduation from ETBC. The couple married on December 26, 1957 at Pleasant View Baptist Church and settled in Dallas. In the early 1960’s, Luther went to work for Steakley Chevrolet and in the process began an almost five decade career in the financial industry. During those years the family moved to Atlanta, Georgia and around Texas, finally settling in Odessa. In addition to his work in banking, Luther also served the Odessa community as a member of the boards of the Crisis Center, Presidential Library and the John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute. In 2009, he retired as President of Southwest Heritage Credit Union, returned to Dallas and enjoyed the things that were most important to him: spending time with family; reading; and preparing lessons for and teaching a Sunday morning Bible study class at his church, Lakeside Baptist. Luther and Doris were married for over 57 years, an accomplishment he relished as a major source of pride. He is survived by his wife, Doris Snell; his son and daughter-in-law, Travis and Rachel Snell; siblings, Lee Snell, Don Snell and Kathy Freeman; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jo Snell Theis. The service for Luther Snell will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 12:30 PM in The Wildwood Chapel at Restland Funeral Home with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, TX 75243.
