Ly Nguyen's Obituary
Ông Nguyễn Hữu Lý đã qua đời vào ngày 29 tháng 1 năm 2024 tại nhà riêng ở Murphy, Texas. Ông sinh ngày 20 tháng 9 năm 1927 tại Quảng Nam, Việt Nam với cha mẹ là Ông Nguyễn Hữu Nhự và Bà Đặng thị Thao. Năm 27 tuổi, Ông kết hôn với vợ là Bà Nguyễn thị Toàn vào ngày 20/7/1954 tại Hội An, Việt Nam. Ông là cha của 7 con trai và 2 con gái, đồng thời là ông nội và ông ngoại của 6 cháu trai và 6 cháu gái.
Năm 1955, Ông theo học tại Học viện Quân sự Quốc gia Việt Nam tại Đà Lạt, Việt Nam, sau đó vào Trường Thiết giáp Kỵ binh của QLVNCH năm 1957, Trường Thiết giáp Quân đội Hoa Kỳ, tại Fort-Knox, Kentucky, năm 1962, và Trường Cao cấp. Bộ Tư Lệnh và Tham Mưu QLVNCH, tại Đà Lạt, Việt Nam, vào năm 1972. Trong 25 năm, ông là Trung Tá Thiết Giáp trong Quân Lực Việt Nam Cộng Hòa.
Năm 1990, Ông cùng vợ và các con định cư tại Dallas, Texas. Khi đang ở độ tuổi nghỉ hưu cao nhất, ông quyết định muốn hoàn thành chương trình học của mình. Lúc đầu, ông theo học tại Eastfield College vào năm 1995 và tốt nghiệp với bằng Cao đẳng về Khoa học và Nghệ thuật. Ngay sau đó, ông theo học tại Đại học Texas ở Dallas và tốt nghiệp năm 2000, ở tuổi 73, với hai bằng nữa là Cử nhân và Thạc sĩ về Văn học Anh và Nhân Văn. Đây là một thành tích ngoạn mục không chỉ của riêng Ông mà còn của cả cộng đồng người Việt nói chung. Sau khi tin tức về thành tích của ông lan truyền, ông đã nhận được bằng khen từ Tổng thống Hoa Kỳ Bill Clinton.
Trong thập kỷ sau đó , Ông đã xuất bản bốn cuốn sách khác nhau bằng cả tiếng Việt và tiếng Anh: Tuyển tập thơ tình mẹ (2006), Tuyển tập quê hương trong thơ ca Việt Nam (2009), Tuyển tập mùa xuân và tuổi trẻ Việt Nam ( 2011), Tuyển tập tác phẩm văn học Việt Anh chọn lọc (2013). Nhiều bản sao của mỗi cuốn sách của ông đã được tặng cho các thư viện và nhà thờ cũng như được tặng cho nhiều người thân yêu của ông.
Ngày 2/10/2017, người vợ yêu thương của Ông là Bà Nguyễn thị Toàn đã qua đời ở tuổi 85. Ông luôn thương nhớ về người vợ của minh. Suốt cuộc đời, ông nổi tiếng là người chăm chỉ và có lòng vị tha. Ông đã hy sinh tất cả mọi thứ cho gia đình mình và không bao giờ ngừng bảo vệ họ.
Lễ tưởng niệm Ông Nguyễn Hữu Lý sẽ được tổ chức tại Nhà tang lễ Restland vào ngày 7 và 8 tháng 2 năm 2024
Ly Huu Nguyen had peacefully passed away on January 29, 2024 in his home in Murphy, Texas. He was born on September 20, 1927 in QuangNam, Vietnam to his parents Nhu Huu Nguyen and Thao Thi Dang. At the age of 27, Ly married his wife, Toan Thi Nguyen, on July 20, 1954 in Hoi An, Vietnam. He was a father to 7 sons and 2 daughters as well as a grandfather to 6 grandsons and 6 granddaughters.
In 1955, Ly attended at the Vietnamese National Military Academy in Dalat, Vietnam, which led him to the Armor Cavalry School of ARVN in 1957, the U.S. Army Armor School, located in Fort-Knox, Kentucky, in 1962, and the Advanced School of Command and Staff of ARVN, located in Dalat, Vietnam, in 1972. For 25 years, he was an Armor First Lieutenant-Colonel in the Army of the Republic in Vietnam.
In 1990, Ly, his wife, and his children had decided to reside in Dallas, Texas. While he was at the prime age of retirement, he decided he wanted to finish his education. At first, he attended Eastfield College in 1995 and graduated with an Associate’s in Arts and Sciences. Shortly after, he attended the University of Texas at Dallas and graduated in 2000, at the age of 73, with two more degrees, a Bachelor’s and Master’s in the Arts of English Literature. This was a spectacular achievement not only just for him but for the Vietnamese community as a whole. After the news had gotten out about his accomplishments, he received a letter of appraisal from the President of the United States, Bill Clinton.
During the next decade, Ly would publish four different books in both Vietnamese and English: A Collection of Poems on Mother Love (2006), The Anthology of Homeland in Vietnamese Poetry and Songs (2009), The Anthology of Spring and Youth of Vietnam (2011), and The Anthology of Selected Vietnamese English Literary Works (2013). Many copies of each of his books have been donated to libraries and churches as well as gifted to many people who were dear to his heart. In his latest book, The Anthology of Selected Vietnamese English Literary Works, he wrote a quote, "My fighting cavalier life let me extensively struggle in multiple places. Now, thinking about the way of ending war, I always feel pitiful for my combat-carrier."
Tragically, on October 2, 2017, Ly's loving wife, Toan Thi Nguyen, had passed away at the age of 85. With a broken heart, Ly yearned for his wife's presence for the following years. Throughout his whole life, he was known as a hard-working and selfless person. He sacrificed everything for his family and never stopped protecting them, no matter what was in his way.
A celebration of Ly Huu Nguyen's life will be held at the Restland Funeral Home on February 7th and 8th, 2024.
