Ly Eav Ung's Obituary
Ly Eav Ung (黃耀利) of Richardson, Texas
Ly departed this life with his family by his side on October 2, 2020 from natural causes after suffering from dementia. He leaves his loving spouse of 45 years, Kim, and his three children and four grandchildren; son Wayne with grandsons Benjamin, Austin, and Henry and son Aaron, granddaughter Arianna, of Richardson, TX and daughter Jenny Anna of New York, NY.
Ly was born in Kampong Svay, Kandal Province, Cambodia on January 10, 1946 to the late Peng Liang Ung of Chaozhou, China and Siv Heng of Kampong Svay, Cambodia. Ly and his wife Kim were married in December 1974 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In April of 1975, the Khmer Rouge took control of the country of Cambodia, which caused Ly and Kim to flee back to their home town of Kampong Svay, Cambodia. By 1980, Ly and Kim escaped the Cambodian genocide through crossing the border of Cambodia to Thailand; Kim holding 3-month old Aaron and 3-year old Wayne, and found refuge in Thailand at Khao-I-Dang refugee camp sponsored by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Then, in 1981, Ly, Kim, Wayne, and Aaron were sponsored by a relative family and emigrated from Thailand to Seattle, Washington, USA. In 1983, Ly and Kim gave birth to their daughter, Jenny Anna, in Bellevue, Washington. Ly studied Engineering during the day, and then worked multiple part-times jobs in the evening to make ends meet, and eventually graduated from North Seattle College in 1985. Ly worked as an Engineer for several years and kept those skills in handy as he transitioned to a career as a baker for the family donut shop, and eventually he became a small business owner.
Ly and Kim moved from Seattle in 1985 to Los Angeles, California where they ran a small donut shop in Garden Grove, CA. Then, in 1991, the Ung family moved from California to Texas, where they have resided in Richardson, Texas for the past 29 years.
Ly was a quiet man with a smile that could light up the room. Ly and his family enjoyed taking road trips across the United States, and with his wife Kim, traveled throughout Southeast Asia and Europe together. Ly was the family handyman, and a jack-of-all-trades; he knew how to do a little bit of everything. Ly enjoyed reading the newspaper with a cup of coffee, and cooking Asian desserts. Ly generously gave time and support to various Buddhist Monk temples and underserved communities.
