Lydia Melanie Britton's Obituary
BRITTON, LYDIA MELANIE passed away at the age of 96 years on April 25, 2014, in Houston, Texas. Lydia was born on August 11, 1917 in Cuero, De Witt County, Texas to Peter Hermann Meyer and Adelheide Boldt Meyer. Lydia was the middle child of seven siblings. During World War II Lydia contributed to the war effort doing office administration work at one of the US Army Air Corps bases in San Antonio, Texas where in 1942 she met and married then Army Air Corps Lt. Thomas N. Britton. Following his return to the United States at the end of 1945, they settled in Dallas, Texas where they soon began to raise a family. After the unexpected death of her husband, Tommy, in 1958, Lydia re-joined the work force as a widowed single mother and proceeded to devote herself to being the family bread winner and raising her son and daughter. She retired from the Internal Revenue Service in 1977. She remained a resident of Dallas until 2004, when she moved to Houston, Texas to live near her son. Lydia loved photography and painting, and showed genuine talent for both. She was also a fine cook. Her pecan and lemon meringue pies were always in demand each Thanksgiving and Christmas. She was a loving daughter, sister, mother, aunt and grandmother. Her smile would brighten the day and we will miss her.
