Malcolm W. Carroll's Obituary
Malcolm Weldon Carroll was born Feb. 15, 1922, to M. W. Carroll, Jr. and Eleanor Ocey Sneed Carroll, and died on June 4, 2011 at the age of 89. With his keen mind and sharp wit, he had a boundless curiosity about the world and loved the mental volley of a great debate. Born and raised in Dallas, he was a 1939 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He became interested in photography while attending the University of Texas, from which he graduated in 1943. He served in the U. S. Army Air Corp as a camouflage instructor and photographer before being honorably discharged. Malcolm returned to Dallas to start Lend-A-Shine Products Company and began manufacturing various cleaning and disinfecting compounds, insistent on products being of the highest quality, not the lowest price. In 1947, his father’s health was clearly failing, so Malcolm began making sales calls to assist the Carroll Company, an automotive parts supply business begun by his father in 1921. Soon thereafter, Lend-A-Shine became a division of Carroll and Malcolm was made Chairman and President in 1960, a position he held until his retirement in 1986. An innovative and visionary businessman with great integrity and an eye for detail, he built Carroll Company into a nationwide industry leader in chemical specialties manufacturing. His talent as a salesman was never more evident than in 1954 when he persuaded Roseanne Ryan to marry him. Over the next five years, they had four children, to whom he was a terrific father. He loved to have his family involved in everything he did. He shared everything, yet never asked for anything in return. It has been said that the greatest thing a man can do for his children is to love their mother, and this he did wholeheartedly and unreservedly. Their 54 year love story ended with his precious Rosie’s unexpected death in 2008. It can’t go without mention that three years ago, as we were despondent over the loss of Mother and becoming ever more aware that Dad was unable to care for himself, two angels descended in the form of Marisela and Isela. They swooped down to take care of his every need. They became his family, his friends, caregivers, and entertainment. They humored him, were firm with him, cajoled him, spoiled him, but best of all, loved him. We will be forever grateful for the joy they brought to his final days and the great comfort it provided us. Predeceased by his parents, older brother James S. (Jimmy) Carroll, and his wife, Malcolm is survived by four children and their spouses: Mike and Melody Carroll, Jay and Kim Carroll, Cathy and Kyle Ogden, and Laura and Russell McNiece; 11 grandchildren: Christina Carroll, Elizabeth Johnson, Michael Carroll, Marilee Wilson, Christopher Carroll, Layne, Callie, Truett and Lollie Ogden, and Malcolm and Coleman McNiece; and 2 great grandchildren: Tyler and Caleb Tippit. Following a private burial, a memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 8th at lO:00am in the Memorial Chapel at Restland Funeral Home, 13005 Greenville Avenue. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
