Margaret Dawson's Obituary
DAWSON, MARGARET “PEGGY” A loving nana, devoted mother, loyal wife and caring friend died on December 15, 2010. After surviving longer than 20 years following breast cancer surgery, Peggy succumbed to complications from lung and heart disease and cancer. Born in 1931 in Boston MA and reared in suburban Quincy, she met her future husband Hal while both were students at Columbia University in New York City. They were wed in 1954 and traveled joyously over the world (44 states and some 35 countries from the Yukon to Cairo and Helsinki to Guatemala; their last trip was to Scotland, Ireland, London and Paris). After Hal’s military service, they settled in Dallas in 1957 where Peggy was active in the art community as a member of the Dallas Museum of Art, Kimball Museum in Fort Worth and the Meadows Museum at SMU. She managed the Ann Cushing Gallery and the Poster Place in the alia Podrida and volunteered at the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery in Kansas City while living in that area. Peggy won prizes for her art and photography from Brookhaven College, the Kaligrafos Calligraphy Society of Dallas and the Farmers Branch-Carrolton Art Association. As a Master Chef she was also honored at the State Fair of Texas, and her recipes can be found in numerous cookbooks. An administrator and participant in the Race for the Cure each October, she was also a long-time (2000 hours) docent with the Dallas Arboretum. Peggy worked as an administrator at the Walker, Franklin and Hill schools before retiring in 1993. Survivors include her husband and two sons, David of Austin, a professor of music at Texas State University, and John, his wife D’ana and his children Connor and Kendyl of Plano. John’s oldest son, Taylor, is an Army officer in Colorado, after graduation in May from West Point, and his youngest son, Garrett, is a student at Texas Tech University. A niece, Mrs. Debbie Huskins, and her family of Braintree MA also survive. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00pm on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at Restland Funeral Home. Service will be held at 3:00pm on Friday, December 17, 2010 at Restland Memorial Chapel.
