Marguerite Helen Howard's Obituary
Marguerite Howard died March 3, 2010 at age 92 She gracefully departed our world at peace with herself, her God and her family. Marguerite Lavender Howard was born May 3, 1917 on her family’s farm a few miles south of Lancaster, TX. She lived and grew up in Lancaster, moved to Dallas in 1930 to live with her eldest sister, and attended Woodrow Wilson High School, graduating June 2, 1933, just one month after her 16th birthday. She became a singer with numerous Dance Bands around the city, and also had a radio show twice a week on WRR, often singing “My Little Grass Shack in Kealakekua Hawaii”. She worked for Sanger Brothers on Lamar Street. Marguerite met her future husband Ed R. Howard in 1936, where he checked for the Piggly Wiggly Food Store on Lower Greenville, a few blocks from her residence on Ridgedale. They wed June 17, 1938, and traveled to Galveston for a frightening and unique honeymoon, as Ed immediately had an emergency appendectomy. They had a wonderful 58 years of marriage, and were true heros in the eyes of their family and community. Marguerite was an avid game player, with special affinity for Bridge, Scrabble, and Crossword puzzles. Her son doesn’t recall ever beating her in Scrabble, losing their last game just two weeks ago. She always shared life with dozens of good friends at all stages of her life, as neighbors, bridge club players, or church and civic organization members. In her last 12 years, she enjoyed many friends at Hyatt Classic Residence. She was small in stature, but had a very strong will. She was a great role model for her kids and family. She will be missed, but her loving ways, character, style, keen intelligence, and resolve will be remembered. Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband, Ed R Howard, and her son Ron T. Howard. She is survived by her sister, Evelyn Mitchell and her large family, her son Ed R Howard, Jr and wife Stephanie, and daughter-in-law Donna Howard. Mimi is also survived by five grandchildren and their families: Eric and wife Lari, Carey and fiancee Sarah, Joel and wife Heidi, Alison Howard Leff and husband Dave, Michael and wife Anne, and five great-grandchildren: Austin, Ethan, Finn, Sammy, and Charlie. Her life will be celebrated in a memorial service, 2 pm Saturday, March 6, 2010, at her church, Preston Hollow Presbyterian. Memorials may be made to PHPC Memorial Fund or your special charity.
