Marianne was the second of five children born to William Wheeler Sharp and Jennie Vora Benson. She grew up with her grandfather and grandmother, Jasper William and Vora Ann (Reddell) Benson, in Sinton, Texas, on the family’s farm. They raised dairy cows, grew citrus trees and vegetables for out of state markets, and ran a plant nursery. After high school graduation, Marianne moved to Austin, attending the University of Texas and lived with her aunt, Nettie Lee Benson who helped establish the UT Latin American Collection and was an instructor in Library Sciences at the university.
She and her husband Chet met during World War II at a dance on the balcony of the Texas Hotel in Austin, Texas. Him, a newly minted Army Second Lieutenant in training at nearby Camp Mabry and her, a co-ed at UT Austin. They married after he returned from combat in the Pacific Theater. They initially lived in Boston, Massachusetts where Marianne was an Administrative Assistant at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge. Ultimately they settled in Richardson, Texas, in the early 1950’s and attended the First Presbyterian Church. In their home they raised their sons into manhood. Their grandchildren have deep and warm memories of the time they spent with their grandparents, as their home was a special place. Marianne now is in her heavenly home.
