Marilyn Savage Ward's Obituary
Dr. Marilyn Savage Ward passed away on March 6, 2008. She was born on September 9, 1928 in Teaneck, NJ, to Ruth Barnes Savage and Edwin Smith Savage of Ohio. Dr. Ward was a long-time Dallas educator beginning at Richardson High School (ten years), Dallas County Community College (approximately twenty years), and finally Southern Methodist University Continuing Education (five years). She received her BA English from University of Texas at Austin, MA History at Southern Methodist University, and the PhD European History at University of New Mexico. She studied at additional universities such as Oxford (England), Cambridge (England), Columbia (New York), and University of California (Guadalajara-Mex). Dr. Ward is preceded in death by her parents (mentioned above), her husband of thirty-seven years, Jay Thomas Ward, and brother Edwin Savage Jr. Dr. Ward is survived by daughter Ellen Ward Lopez and former son-in-law Blas Lopez, both from Charlotte, NC; daughter Andrea Ward Rolfingsmeier and grandson Cort Rolfingsmeier, both from Kansas City, KS; sister-in-law Helen Savage Lanute; niece, Virginia Savage Bowen; grand-niece Francine Bowen Grittenger, grand-nephew Chris Bowen, all from Milwaukee, WI; and Jim and Jane Bowen of Austin, TX. Besides her lifelong passion for learning, she enjoyed numerous family vacations to the beautiful North Carolina beaches (1960’2006); travels to Europe, Russia, and Asia with her daughter, Ellen, and reading, reading, reading. Her family will miss her quick wit, her historical, literary, and political perspectives, and her friendship.
