Marjorie Farmer Arrington's Obituary
Marjorie Farmer Arrington, 94, was born on October 13, 1928, in Donna, Texas, to Garland Henderson Farmer and Mary Ida Sewell Farmer. She was the fourth child following Garland, James, and Mary Katherine. Later the fifth child, Donald, joined the family. Her parents and siblings predeceased her. She is survived by five nieces, Marilyn, Christine, Louise, Linda Ann, and Brenda and one nephew, Ted.
Her father was a minister of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, and every few years the family moved to different towns in Texas for his ministry. Marjorie graduated from Brenham High School in 1946. She attended Blinn College then transferred to Sam Houston State College, graduating in 1950 with a major in English. Her 42 years of teaching English, Latin and Theater Arts included teaching in Falfurrias, Tex., Bay City, Tex., Alamo Heights in San Antonio, Tex., Corpus Christi, Tex., Denver, Col., and North Garland High School in Garland, Tex.
In 1957, Marjorie met C.L. Arrington at church in San Antonio and after a short courtship, they were married. They never had children because Marjorie always said she had plenty of school children. They traveled and relocated several times due to C.L.’s business, but she always seemed to get a job teaching English no matter where they were. Once they moved to Dallas, this was their final location. They were married for 23 years until C.L. died of a heart attack in 1980 at the age of 63. Marjorie continued to live at the townhouse until 2018 when she moved to Brookdale Lake Highlands assisted living and memory care.
Marjorie retired in 1992 and began traveling with friends on cruises, seeing Mickey Mouse (who shared the same birthday) at Disney World, and visiting out-of-town family members. She loved reading and joined several book clubs, taught English Adult Education and delivered Meals on Wheels for over 15 years. The loves of her life besides C.L. were her dachshunds, Missy, Missy R, and Lily. They were great companions for her especially after C.L.’s death.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a women’s educational organization, in Corpus Christi and later was a reserve member in Austin. She enjoyed visitors and could talk for hours with them. She loved going shopping, to church, and to the beauty shop. Instead of cooking, she often would take family and friends out to eat. She was known for her beautiful penmanship and her personal touch in letter writing. This is how she kept in touch with family members and personal friends. She enjoyed the theater, going to the Dallas Summer Musicals, and Texas State Fair.
Marjorie was a member of the Northway Christian Church in Dallas for over 50 years and enjoyed being a greeter. She was very generous and contributed to many different funds that helped others. She loved shopping all year long for gifts for family members and could always find that perfect gift for each person.
Marjorie died on May 14, 2023, at the age of 94. She made such a difference to her students, her family, her friends, her pets and anyone who knew her. Services will be Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at 2pm at Wildwood Chapel, Restland Cemetery, 13005 Greenville Ave., Dallas Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Meals on Wheels or to the charity of your choice.
