Ms. Marlene Baker Phipps' Obituary
Marlene Baker Phipps of Richardson, TX, was born on October 4, 1937, in Washington Court House, OH, to Floyd Edgar Baker and Sarah Wright Baker. She passed away on March 25, 2024, at her daughter’s house in Lucas, TX, after an extended battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Sharon Baker Clemans; her husband, Larry Kenneth Phipps; and her stillborn grandson, Robert Moreau Phipps.
Marlene spent much of her childhood in Lubbock, TX, with her father and her stepmother, Myrtle Baker, where she made lifelong friends and sang in the high school choir with Buddy Holly. She was married in 1956 to Larry Kenneth Phipps, and they had 3 children: David Phipps, Dewaine (Leann) Phipps, and Darla (Jim) Goodman. Marlene was a devout Christian, loving wife, amazing mother, and the World’s Best Grandmother, and being “Ma” was the highlight of her life. Besides her 3 children, she is survived by 5 grandchildren, all of whom adored her: Riley (Zoey) Goodman, Kenneth Phipps, Molly Phipps, Andrew Phipps, Jameson Cooper Goodman and her “bonus grandson,” Cody (Lauren) Farrell .
Marlene was a member of The Heights Baptist Church in Richardson, where she greatly enjoyed singing in the senior choir and where she served as the “card lady,” sending greetings of congratulations and sympathy to other members of the church. She was also an avid sports fan and a big supporter of Texas Tech, the Dallas Cowboys, the Dallas Mavericks, and of course, the Texas Rangers. She will be so missed but will live on in her family and friends’ memories.
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.’” — John 11:25-26
