Martha Carroll's Obituary
Martha Carroll, born on February 23,, 1939, passed away on December 15th, 2016 at age 77. Her colorful life began in Marion, Alabama. There, she was born 8 years after her older brother James W. Cronin, who won Nobel Prize in physics in 1980. She was the daughter to her mother Dorothy Schuster, and father James Farley Cronin, who was a professor of Latin and Greek at Southern Methodist University. She attended Highland Park High School where she graduated in 1956. In high school, she developed a love of math and science, and attended Sothern Methodist University in the fall of 1956, graduating 4 years later in 1960. While in college, Martha also became fond of ballet, and eventually worked her way up to toe performances. After obtaining her bachelor’s degree. She went on to pursue her love of mathematics by receiving a Masters in math at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. She married C.B Wallace on June 10, 1961. Together, they had two children, older sister Diana Corkill and younger brother William Wallace, who obtained an Electrical Engineering degree. After 10 years of marriage Martha and C.B divorced in 1972 in Dallas, Texas. She remarried to her final husband Gene on December 16, 1978; they were one day short of celebrating their 38th wedding anniversary. Martha was known for her persistence and strong work ethic. Her love of math came out when she began her career as an accountant. After graduating college, she went on to work for the Texas Department of Human Services for 29 years. For the last 7 years, she was budget director for Region 03, which includes Dallas, Tarrant, and the 17 surrounding counties. She then retired on December 31, 2001. Martha was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by: her husband Gene; her children Diana Corkill and William Wallace; her step daughter Danielle Ellis; her grandchildren Kurt, Trevor, Katrina, Adele, and Wilson and step grandchildren Laura, Michael, Alexandria and Daniel. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, TX 75243.
