Martha Eilzabeth Condry's Obituary
Born January 23, 1916 and passed away January 3, 2008. ‘Aunt Martha’ died peacefully, in the loving presence of family, just shy of her 92nd birthday. She was active and lived at home until a coronary event on Christmas morning 2007. In the 1930’s, her beauty, talent and grace won her the title of Miss Denison, followed by an offer to go to Hollywood. She chose instead to attend business college and stay close to her mother, Kathleen Baker (later Pattillo), an independent woman who achieved a distinguished 30-year career with the M-K-T Railroad. After a few years of proving impressive capability in business, the decision to remain in Texas was rewarded when she met the handsome and charming Air Force Pilot, Carson Emmett Condry. It would be accurate to say he swept her off her feet. The couple were married on July 9, 1944, only four months prior to his deployment to Rome to fly C1-44D transport missions, often over enemy territory, in the European theater of World War II. Their marriage was vivid proof that romance and passion can be sustained for 57 years. Carson never missed an opportunity to relive the highlights of their courtship and give Martha one of his ‘torrid winks’, followed by a tender caress. Of all his accomplishments, he was most proud of having won the hand of Miss Martha Elizabeth Baker. Martha was predeceased by her husband, Carson Emmett Condry, in 2001. Also, by her mother, Kathleen Baker Pattillo, her father, Perry G. Baker, step-father, George P. ‘Tully’ Pattillo, three brothers, Reginald Reeves ‘Rex’ Baker, Russell Montez Baker, Ralph Garvin Baker, nephew Maury Thomas Baker and sister-in-law, Mary Jane Condry Shanfelt. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Patricia Baker Klutts (Joe), Jackie Baker Scoggins, Sharon Baker Wilhelm (Mike), Richard Scott Baker, Jerre Baker Dowty, Kathleen Baker Lohr (Richard), brother-in-law, Russell Condry and family, the Eugene Shanfelt family and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. All the above loved Martha, treasured her presence in their lives and will forever remember her beauty, dignity and the overall example of her life. It must be noted that she was also predeceased by a long line of cats whom she cherished with love and impeccable care, and was survived by seven of these fat, happy and beautiful ‘babies’. Family will welcome guests Monday 9:00-10:00 AM for visitation. Her service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, January 7th, at Restland’s Wildwood Chapel.
