Martha Louise Esterhay's Obituary
ESTERHAY, MARTHA LOUISE (LOCKHART) LOCKHART 89 passed away January 23, 2011. She was born August 2, 1921 to Mamie Gatlin Lockhart and Lucian C. Lockhart, in Tupelo, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Mary MacBartlety. She is survived by her husband, Charles J. Esterhay and son, John L. Esterhay. She graduated from North Texas Teachers College, now the University of North Texas in Denton, TX with a BS Degree. She taught two years then joined the US Army WACS. She was assigned to the Signal Corp. Her unit was assigned to the South Pacific Teather of Operations. She served in New Guinea and Manila, Philippines. In Manila the Signal Corp was based in the Santo Tomas University, which had served as a prison buy the Japanese for captured prisoners. The prison had just been liberated by the US Army. At the Signal Center in Manila she met her husband, Charles Esterhay. They were married July 1, 1945 in the Home of Gregario Perfecto, a Justice of the Philippine Supreme Court. On returning home, she and Charles enrolled in SMU where she received her Masters of Education Degree. In Dallas she taught at city Park, Obediah Knight and John J. Pershing School. She retired from the John J. Pershing School where she was named Teacher of The Year. Service will be private.
