Aunt Martha and Uncle Sam were always fun to be with and knew how to make me feel special!
As a little girl, we would visit them occasionally. It wasn’t often because we had to go all the way from north Dallas to DeSoto, which was considered a long way back then, early 60’s. It was always a treat. But my favorite visits were during the Christmas season. Their house was decorated inside and out ( back then not a lot of people went to the trouble and expense of putting lights on the house). She let me drink out of a Santa mug (so cool! I bought some for my kids because of how special that was for me!).
They also hosted family get-togethers at their cabin. I know it must have been a lot of work on their part, but it was so much fun!
Martha and I shared a love for dogs! I loved to watch her interact with her dogs, which adored her! And she would talk to and interact with mine!
They visited us when we lived in England. She and Sam were so enthusiastic about the history and places we visited. One outing, Sam was navigating and misread the map, sending us on a “scenic” route. He was so aggravated that they didn’t have an exit where it should have been, and Martha got hm to calm down. Even when I visited them in Colorado as Alzheimer’s was affecting Sam, she never raised her voice and always spoke in a calming tone. That was Martha to me!
I know she loved teaching music! She talked about and kept up with many of her piano students through the years. She taught as long as she could. In fact, she gave piano lessons recently in the home where she lived to a 90-year-old resident who had always wanted to learn how to play the piano!
She loved her family, including extended family! She always gave me a unique Christmas gift before she had her own children (I still have a little piano that my grandkids play with!). She has kept up with my kids (even had my daughter spend the night with them when they were still living in Dallas). She wanted to know my grandchildren’s names and ages, even though she never met any of them. She even wanted pictures of them and showed them to her friends. She showed me some of her extended family photo albums and shared interesting stories about them when I last visited her in Colorado. Martha made an impact on my many and was loved and appreciated for her investment in our lives!
