Martha Ann (Ohmsieder) Baker's Obituary
Martha Ann (Ohmsieder) Baker was born in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, on March 24, 1934, and died in Dallas, Texas, on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025. She grew up in the small town of Weir, Kansas, and did some undergraduate studies at Kansas State Teachers College (now known as Pittsburg State University) where she was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. She continued her studies at the University of Kansas where she received her Bachelors in the Science of Nursing in 1956. She was a pediatric nursing instructor and lecturer at KU for several years following her graduation. She was also a school nurse in Neosho, Missouri, and worked for the Jasper County Health Department early in her career.
Martha married Russell Goble Baker on April 5, 1958, in Pittsburg, Kansas. A few years later they moved to Reno, Nevada, where Russell was a rocket scientist. She took the opportunity to go back to school and get her Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Nevada in Reno.
After the Apollo program ended, the family moved to Farmers Branch and then Carrollton, Texas. Martha was hired as an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Baylor University in 1971. Her tenure at Baylor lasted 25 years.
When she wasn’t teaching nursing, she served as a staff nurse at several medical centers in Kansas, Missouri, Nevada and Texas.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents Chris Arthur Ohmsieder and Lillie May Harris Ohmsieder, her husband Russell Goble Baker, her brother Bill Ohmsieder and her sister Kris Sullivan. She is survived by her daughter Martha Lynn Puchlopek, son-in-law Fred Puchlopek and grandson Russell Joseph Puchlopek, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Martha requested contributions be made to Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church or the University of Kansas School of Nursing.
