Martha Jo Smith's Obituary
Martha Jo Smith, 92, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2020. Born November 9, 1927 in Cooper, TX as Martha Jo Kern where she grew up on the family farm. She was the youngest of two children of Clara and Hollis Kern. She graduated in 1945 from Bartley Woods High School where she played on the Women’s Basketball Team. She continued her love for the game as a diehard Mark Cuban and Mavericks fan. While she earned a scholarship to Mary Hardin Baylor College, she chose to move to the big city of Dallas where she worked at Sears Roebuck & Co Mail Order plant on Lamar Ave for 37 years. She was a trail blazer raising two small children and managing a full-time career as a divorcee in the early sixties. Found love and married Jabez B. Smith, who passed away 3 yrs. after they married.
Martha was a devoted mother and was kind and caring to everyone she met. Her greatest joy was spending time with family and enjoyed watching the Mavericks, Cooking and Gardening.
Martha attended St Pius X Catholic Church, member of the Good Bar Senior Center in Mesquite, where she loved playing cards and dominos with her friends. Also, a member of the Over 55 club at her church.
Survived by her children Stephen W Craig (Susan daughter-in-law) and Sharon K Schumacher (Michael son-in-law). Grandchildren, Timothy Fox (Savannah), Sean Fox (Clarissa), Taylor Schumacher (Bonnie) and Brandon Daffron (Laney), and Great Grandmother to Katelyn Fox, Jeffery Fox, and Gwenyth Schumacher.
She was preceded in death by husband Jabez B. Smith, Mother Clara Ann Howell and Brother Robert E. Kern.
Graveside Funeral services will be held on July 3, 2020 at 9:00am at Restland Funeral Home 13005 Greenville Ave, Dallas, TX 75243.
