Martha was my friend and confidante. We hung out together hours after most colleagues had left for the day. We discussed politics, and raising children, and marriage, and teaching tips, and family and sibling rivalry. At the end of our discussions, we always felt that somehow we had solved some part of the "world's problems." Later in our lives, we bragged about our grandchildren, and the joy they brought to our lives.
No one could share our joy like Martha. She became consumed with our excitement, and reveled in the re-enactment of of our feats.
I will miss her, but I have promised myself never to forget the time we shared and how it helped me to grow into the woman I am today.
