Martha Oden Surratt's Obituary
Martha Oden Surratt, 85, of Dallas, TX, passed away on Monday, December 14, 2015. Martha was born on October 7, 1930 in Waco, TX to Claude and Elizabeth Oden. She graduated from Waco High School and the University of Texas at Austin. She was a longtime English teacher at Richardson High School, retiring in 1994. Following her teacher retirement, Martha remained active through her service at the Center for Computer Assistance to the Disabled (C-CAD) in Dallas, and Network of Community Ministries in Richardson. She was very involved in Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary organization for women educators, where she served as president and treasurer for her chapter. In 1999, Martha received the Epsilon Chapter Achievement Award. She was a member of Arapaho United Methodist Church for more than 40 years, volunteering and serving in many capacities, including Finance Secretary for a number of years. Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Surratt, and her son, Richard. She is survived by her sister, Mary Crowley of Dallas; son, Alan Surratt of Minneapolis, MN; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and David Meeker of Berthoud, CO; son and daughter-in-law, Phil and Maria Surratt of Kennesaw, GA; and ten grandchildren. A celebration of Martha’s life will take place at 2:30p.m. on Saturday, December 26th at Arapaho United Methodist Church in Richardson, TX, with a reception at the church for all guests immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Network of Community Ministries or Arapaho United Methodist Church, both in Richardson, TX.
