Marvin Lee Carlson's Obituary
Marvin L. Carlson was a professor of accounting at the Edwin L. Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University, where he taught managerial accounting and management control systems in the MBA and Executive MBA programs. Dr. Carlson’s MBA and PhD Degrees are from the University of Wisconsin. He is a CPA, holding the Elijah Watt Sells award from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants for ranking in the top ten candidates nationally on the CPA examination. Prior to coming to Southern Methodist University, Dr. Carlson was on the faculty of the Graduate School of Business of Washington University, St. Louis, where he received the Outstanding Professor award. At SMU, Professor Carlson was the recipient of both the Rotunda Outstanding Professor award and the Nicholas Salgo Distinguished Teacher award. Additionally, Dr. Carlson received both the BBA Distinguished Teacher award and the MBA/EMBA Distinguished Teaching Award. He held the position of Touche-Ross Teaching Fellow at SMU.Professor Carlson served on the editorial review boards of The Accounting Review and the Journal of the Operational Research Society. He published in both those journals as well as The Financial Executive and Omega: The International Journal of Management Science. In addition, he authored over 30 cases that are frequently used in MBA and executive education programs. Dr. Carlson was a director of several corporations. He was employed by IBM and later served that corporation as a consultant. Other clients included 3M, Monsanto, Ralston Purina, Sammons Enterprises, Abco, World Color Press, American Graphics, Inc., and Saudi Aramco.He has a wife, Dianne. His two children are Jenny and Leif. Leif is married to Jonette with a daughter, Madelyn, 8. Dianne has two children, Stephanie Bell and Katheryn Moore, who is married to Alan. They have two daughters, Elizabeth, 16, and Julia, 13. Marv’s wife, Joyce Carlson passed away of cancer.Marv is a member with his wife of Park Cities Baptist Church In Dallas, TX
