Mary Lou Cummings' Obituary
Our beloved Aunt Mimi, Mary Lou Cummings, sister of our dearly departed Mother, Joan Flanders, and last living member of our parents’ generation, has been on the decline over the past year. She passed away at 9:05 am, July 10, 2014. She was surrounded by her close family of nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews, as she transitioned from our earthly world, to The Kingdom of God. She was a brilliant and amazing woman. A pioneer in business, she was a Cornell graduate with two master’s degrees. She consulted insurance industry executives primarily in the New York City Metropolitan area for many years, schooling them in business communications and labor relations. She was at the highest level in her industry, recognized as a maverick and greatly respected leader in her field. She married late in life and spent 10 years with her husband, and love of her life, Bob Cummings, until his journey on earth concluded. Following, she relocated to Richardson, TX, in early 2001. She moved from New York to be with her sister, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and their children. She took joy in her family, and her numerous friends. As a family of Christian believers, we know she had a relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. We stand steadfast in our knowledge of her status in heaven, with God, her family and friends. We are grateful for her extraordinary almost 92 years of life. She possessed outstanding character and was a strong woman of virtue in the life of our family, and the lives of so many others. And as a pioneering woman of the 1960’s in business, we recognize her significant contributions as an agent of change for the cause of women in our workplace. She became a member of the P.E.O. sisterhood back in her home state of New York and then joined the EZ chapter when she moved to Texas. P.E.O. is a Philanthropic Educational Organization in which women celebrate the advancement of women, educate women through scholarships/grants/awards/loans & stewardship of Cottey College. She so loved this organization and was thrilled when her niece, Valerie Kirkpatrick became a member of P.E.O. – Chapter FL, in Richardson, TX. Thanks to P.E.O. – Chapter FL, her great niece, Jenny Evans received a $1500 grant through a Program for Continuing Education which allowed Jenny to finish and graduate from nursing school at U.T.M.B. in Galveston, TX this April, 2014. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to P.E.O. – Chapter FL and sent to Penny Bonneau, Treasurer at 1601 Rockshire Dr. Plano, TX 75074. Please reference Mary Cummings on memo line. We hope the story of our beloved Aunt lifts your spirits. May the peace of Christ be with, and remain with each of you, always. With love from all Mary Lou’s nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and yes – great great nieces and nephews!
