The very first time I met Mary was a few months before I married Shirley, her daughter. The first thing she said to me was “come walk with me”. It wasn’t a request . Uh-oh! As we began our walk, the first thing she asked me was “are you a Christian?” I answered Yes! She said “are you sure you know what you’re getting into marrying Shirley with three children?" I said "yes", I love her, and that’s the end of it. That was 30 years ago and I've referred to Mary as "Mom" for all those years.
For the past 12 years Roger & Mary lived on our property 120 feet in front of our home. Roger, her husband, became my best friend. He passed away 4 years ago, he asked "please take care of Mary", which we did. He had taken care of her for 70 years. However, Mary was very independent. So much so it concerned me she was still driving, at 93 years old, just 6 weeks prior to her death. I took her to many medical appointments, she was the healthiest 93 year old woman the doctors would say, and always afterwards, she would want to go for a meal and a drink, usually Applebees or Whataburger. She loved Brahms milk shakes, often getting two and putting one in the freezer for another day.
Death is inevitable but I'm comfortable knowing her daughter, Shirley, and I, along with her three grandchildren and niece were present when she passed, at home, in no pain. God has her soul now which is GOOD news! Hallelujah.
