Mary Edith Chatfield Echerd, Aug. 29, 1931 - Oct. 11, 2021
Mary Echerd, the daughter of Frank B. And Alleen Chatfield, was born August 29, 1931 in Dallas, Texas. A lifelong Dallas resident, Mary graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and attended Southern Methodist University. She majored in English, was active in the Chi Omega sorority and graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
At SMU. she met George Echerd on a blind date. They continued to date and married on July 3, 1953, a union that lasted 63 years. Mary and George moved to Washington, D.C. and then to Munich, Germany where George served as an officer in the US. Army Corps of Engineers. Together they toured much of Europe, a place they returned to many times over their many happy years together. They returned to Dallas where Mary taught English to seniors at Woodrow Wilson High School, and George worked for UARCO business forms.
Mary and George's first child, Glynn Steven, was born in December 1958 and was joined by his brother, Mark Randal, in January 1960. The family was completed by the birth of their daughter, Diane Leslie, in 1966. Mary was a homemaker and dedicated wife and mother who was active in the Pierian Club, the Daughters Of The American Revolution and the Dallas Garden Club.
Mary and George were active members of the 2x2 class at Highland Park Methodist Church for over 60 years. In 1972, Mary and George started a successful business forms design and sales company, Multiforms Inc., which they owned and operated for over 40 years. Mary and George loved to travel and enjoyed many trips abroad. They particularly liked cruises and formed lasting friendships with people they met on board ship. Mary was a prolific reader all of her life and a skilled needle-pointer, her home is filled with many elaborate pieces she created.
She enjoyed cooking and hosting groups large and small in her beautiful home. She loved dogs, owning many Boston Terriers from her first childhood pet Mickey, followed by half a dozen more Bostons and even one well-loved Beagle, Barney.
Mary is survived by her son, Glynn and his wife, Margaret, their children, Robert and Elizabeth; son, Mark and his wife, Bridget, their children, Kyle and Courtney; Diane's husband Mark Neely and her children Anthony, Brittany and Andrew Faller.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 18, 2021 at Restland Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 17, 2021, also at Restland. Memorials may be made to the S.P.C.A. or to Highland Park United Methodist Church.
