Mary Virginia Egan's Obituary
EGAN, MARY VIRGINIA HARRIS (MERMEE) was born in Dallas on March 6, 1922 and left us on December 30, 2013. She was a proud 3rd generation Texan, granddaughter of the first physician in North Texas and eldest daughter of D.D. and Ruth Harris. She was a strong, charismatic woman with deep commitments to family, friends and community. She married Frank B. Egan in 1945 and raised four sons, empowering each with the same fierce independence and self reliance that guided her. She was always a dedicated volunteer, vigorously donating time and energy to church, community and especially the Boy Scouts of America. She was a Red Cross Swimming Instructor and taught swimming and life saving to more than 10,000 Boy Scouts. For this The BSA awarded her the Silver Fawn for distinguished service to boyhood in 1971. As her children went their own way, she turned to education and earned a Masters of Fine Arts from North Texas University. She taught public school, then turned her energies to the arts, becoming a champion of The Friends of WRR, serving on the Dallas Symphony Board & Dallas Opera Guild and was a member of the Dallas Craft Guild. Later she became a businesswoman working with Frank in his accounting practice. She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank, and is survived by a sister, Betty Ruth Robinson; a sister-in-law Mary Ann Harris; her sons and their significant others: Michael & Katy, John & Kathlyn, Robert & Helen and David & Eileen; seven grandchildren and their spouses: Matthew & Linslee Egan, Corey & Lorena Egan, Prather & Jameson O’Donnell, Franklin & Glenna Egan, Dean Egan, Paul Egan and Kaitlin Egan; Four great grandchildren: Audrey Egan, Austin Egan, Dylan Thomas Egan and Imogen O’Donnell.
