Mary Katherine Gandy's Obituary
GANDY, MARY KATHERINE ADDINGTON Born Nov. 7, 1917 in Water Valley, MS to Samuel David Addintgon and LeNora Ann Lewellyn. Graduated from Water Valley High School and attended Texarkana Business College. Married Marvin Campbell Shine January 1936. They had one child, a daughter, Mary Ann. Marvin passed away in January 1937. Kay moved to Texarkana after a brief position with PWA and was employed by Miller Management Co. from 1937 to 1939. She then moved to Dallas and began her career in dentistry. She was married to Carson Eugene Gandy July 12, 1942 and he then adopted her daughter. She received her Dental Hygiene Certificate from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1957 and served in many local and state professional organizations. She was the first Texan to serve as President of the American Dental Hygiene Association. She presented a paper at the XV World Dental Congress, in Mexico City, in 1972 on the Future of the Operating Dental Auxiliary in the United States. She also presided over the Second International Symposium in Montraeaux, Switzerland and represented the ADHA at the Federation Dentaire Internationale in Munich, Germany. Previously having served as President of the Texas Dental Hygienist Association and the Dallas Dental Hygienist Association. She held Life Memberships in all three organizations, being widely respected and admired in her profession. She left this profession in 1975 to join her husband in establishing The Promenade Shop in Richardson. She retired from this business in 1985. She has been active and held offices in several book clubs and investment clubs. She organized a scholarship fund for employees at the Signature Pointe on The Lake after moving there. Kay is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Cecil Branum and Charlyne Bryant and her daughter, Mary Ann Bob. She is survived by her daughters husband, Ed; four grandchildren, Ken and Pam Thoman, Terri Thoman, Robin and Mike Smith and Kimberly Ann DeMarie; 4 great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00PM, Friday, September 9, 2011 at Restland Funeral Home. Service will be held at 12:30PMm Saturday at Restland Wildwood Chapel.
