Mary Evelyn Gonczy's Obituary
Mary Evelyn Gonczy, 88, was born on February 3, 1930 to Mary Hall Rehberg and Samuel Rehberg in Lakeland, Florida. She passed away on February 5, 2018 in Plano, Texas.The oldest of 4 children, she was preceded in death by her parents, younger brother, and her beloved husband of nearly 46 years, Andrew Gonczy.She is survived by her daughter Andrea and son-in-law Greg Cockrell, and her two younger sisters, Lorene “T.Y.” Caraway & Marian Dowdy. And she was a second mom to many more who will miss her deeply, including her niece Theresa Caraway and her “son” Bruce Moreland.Mary was very active and held many different jobs in her life time, working well into her seventies. She was happiest when she could use her ingenuity and creativity and was drawn to jobs and volunteer opportunities where she could put her many talents to work, including fashion and costume designing, floral arranging, cake decorating, cooking, catering and party planning. Over the course of her life, she worked as a factory worker, governess, housekeeper, homemaker, church hostess, restaurant manager and chef, substitute teacher, child care provider and entrepreneur.Her hobbies were an outlet for her creativity as well. She loved to do crafts and work in her garden – which was always full of beautiful plants and flowers. She was a fan of antiques and garage sales, and loved cats and hummingbirds, but most of all Mary loved people. The home she shared with Andrew was often filled with neighbors, friends and family. It was the favorite place for many kids over the years.Visitation for Mary will be on February 8, from 6-8 PM at Restland Funeral Home. Graveside service will be on February 9, at 9 AM at DFW National Cemetery. Memorial service will be on February 9, at 3:30 PM in the Abbey Chapel at Restland Funeral Home.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home, 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, TX 75243.
