Mary Harvey Main's Obituary
Mary Harvey Main
Oct. 30, 1917 – Sept. 19, 2023
Mary Harvey Main went home to her heavenly father Sept. 19, 2023, at the age of 105.
Born in Jenks, Okla., during World War I, Mary grew up in the Oklahoma City area and spent summers with her aunt Ruth in Wynnewood, Okla. In 1940, she met and married the love of her life, Duane Owen Main, in Arkansas. They were both champion archers, earning several awards. They went on to raise four children in Washington, D.C., where Duane was a cartographer in the Navy and Mary was a homemaker.
Following her husband’s death in 1970, Mary returned to Oklahoma where she was deeply involved in the rights of the mentally ill and was a founding member of the Norman Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Due to her efforts as a lobbyist, her actions effected policies at the state level.
Mary moved to Texas for 17 years to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. While in Dallas, “Nana” supported her grandchildren at countless activities, attended her first hockey game, sewed on many Boy Scout merit badges and was a part of everything from collecting coins to playing cards. She even left the country for the first time a month before her 85th birthday, spending two weeks in England and Wales.
Active well into her 100s, Mary loved taking walks, reading and spending time with her family. She enjoyed cheering on her OU Sooners, watching the Little League World Series and always tuned into the National Spelling Bee.
Mary cited her greatest accomplishment in life as her family. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Melody Main (David Ledbetter), daughter Karen Main, granddaughter Olivia (Jake) Breedlove, grandson Baron (Emily) Kiespert, granddaughter Chevonne Kiespert, grandson Alan York, great-grandson Beckham Breedlove, cousin Marylin (Sam) LeFlore and many other family members and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband Lt. Duane Owen Main, son Duane Wade Main, daughter Sharon Jo Main, grandson Bryan Jay York, parents Olivia Caroline Kincaid and Willis Sidney Harvey Sr., brother Willis Sidney Harvey Jr. and many other family members and friends.
