Mary Jane Painter Hannon's Obituary
Our mother, Mary Jane Painter Hannon, ‘Nana’, passed away peacefully Monday, May 31st, 2021. Born in Dallas, Texas, July 12,1929 at St. Paul Sanitarium, to Robert Wilson Painter and Calel Yantis Painter. She was a fifth generation Texan. During her formative years, Mary Jane resided in Dallas, Tx. Her family moved to Hollis, Oklahoma in 1937. She was a member of the Hollis High School Class of 1947.
Mary Jane enrolled at North Texas State College for the Fall Semester, 1947 and graduated in August, 1951, with a Bachelor of Science in Education. While at North Texas, she met and married William F. "Bill" Hannon. They were married on December 23, 1950 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Upon her graduation from North Texas State College, Mary Jane joined her husband in Monte Alto, Texas. Her first child, Kevin and, second child, Kerry were born while she resided in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
In 1953, her growing family moved to Odessa, Texas for a short stint before making a permanent move to Crane, Texas, where Bill accepted a teaching position with the Crane ISD. Mary Jane would later join the faculty as an elementary school teacher. During their time in Crane, they added three more children, Robert, Andrew & Sean. Mary Jane remained a teacher with the Crane ISD until her retirement in 1989. She and Bill traveled extensively until his death in 1992. Mary moved to Odessa in 2003 remaining there until 2015, when she moved to Waxahachie, Texas. She would later move to Plano, TX in 2018, where she was residing at the time of her death.
Our mother loved the holidays, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas. At Thanksgiving, she was known for baking everyone’s favorite pies, and at Christmas she made candy, LOTS of candy. Mary Jane was very involved in the lives of her five children. volunteering in the elementary school, Cub Scouts, 4-H and supporting them in their extra-curricular activities. However, as a mother, Mary Jane was a disciplinarian, not our friend, and did a great job in teaching each of us the basics of homecare, such as cooking, ironing, yardwork and cleaning. She made sure each of her children participated in activities at the First Christian Church of Crane, laying the foundation for their Christian beliefs. After moving to Odessa, she was an active member of Antioch Christian Church.
Mary Jane had an adventurous spirit to travel. She was blessed to see numerous places around the world including, Europe, Australia, and throughout the United States.
Mary Jane is survived by her five children: Kevin and wife, Phyllis Macek Hannon of Waxahachie, daughter, Kerry Hedgpeth and husband, Skip of Midland, son, Robert and wife, Elaine Parmer Hannon of Plano, son, Andrew and wife, Nancy Francis Hannon of San Antonio and son, Sean and wife, Cheryl Lemon Hannon of Salt Lake City, UT. The family would like to thank Jean and the staff at Harbor Chase of Plano and Embrace Hospice for their care and compassion for our mother.
