Matthew Joseph Maughan's Obituary
Matthew Joseph Maughan born October 31, 1930 in Leon, Iowa passed away March 13, 2016 in Southlake, Texas. No one questioned the direction Matt Maughan would take upon graduating from high school in Leon, Iowa. He had fallen in love with Texas while taking an American Red Cross course in water safety. He was working for the city of Leon as a lifeguard. Matt’s mother, an outstanding music teacher, taught in Leon. His father, the local country doctor with a vintage car, drove throughout the countryside seeing his patients. His car was his office. Matt chose to follow his father’s footsteps, however, taking a “different route” toward his goal. Times were hard, money was scarce. He would work his way through college first as a surgeon’s assistant at the university (state) hospital. Throughout his studies, he continued to dream of having his own medical office in Texas. With the advice of a college friend and former army medic, Matt later applied and entered Midwestern University in Chicago, graduating with his medical degree. With the degree “under his arm”, Matt was on his way to Dallas where he joined a suburban practice, continuing to work long hours and eventually reaching his goal. It was in Dallas; Matt met the love of his life, Oklahoma born, Jerry Ann Qualls, an intellectual young lady, with two almost grown children, one married and one in college. Matt and Jerry married in 1973. Jerry had worked in several offices and was familiar with medical procedures. She served along with her husband as a number one business manager. With letters of encouragement from local MD’s, Matt applied for further training in radiology at Parkland Hospital Southwestern University in Dallas and VA hospitals. After covering positions throughout the Metroplex and Fort Hood, a position in Mesquite opened. Matt became the Interventional Radiologist covering positions throughout the Metroplex. Matt had reached his goal! It was time for the young man from Iowa and his Okie wife to stop walking….. They are in Texas! Matthew was preceded in death by his parents Clyde Nicholas and Helen Claire (Gammill) Maughan; a brother, Clyde Nicholas “Nick” Maughan II and his wife Vera; a sister Arametta Romine and her husband James; and two great-nephews, Joseph Stuart Maughan and Matthew John Maughan. He is survived by his brother John and his wife Ruth; nephews Kevin (Dawn) Maughan, John (Diane) Maughan II, James Romine and Joseph Romine; and nieces Kimberly (Roger) Briggs, Laura (Monte) Bowden and Linda Maughan; nine great-nephews, two great-nieces and one great-great niece. Also survived by, Jerry Ann Maughan, wife; Dixi and Randy Price – Jerry Ann’s daughter and son in law; Greg and Lori Perry, Jerry Ann’s son and daughter-in-law; Wendy and Greg Newell – Dixi’s daughter and son in law; Keegan Newell – Wendy and Greg’s son; Marshal and Candyce Perry – Greg and Lori’s son; Blake and Clifton Perry – Marshal and Candyce’s sons.
