Mattie Hazel Calloway's Obituary
She was named Mattie because of our grandmother, Mattie Calloway. She was named Hazel because of her cousin, Hazel Montgomery from Birmingham. We called her Hazel because Grandmother Mattie and Mattie Hazel could have been confusing. Hazel is a keen observer and a good listener. We all laugh about the day in church when the minister thought he was waxing eloquently and used these words, “eyes have heard and ears have seen.” Hazel caught that slip up while most of us let it go over our head. Hazel attended SC Colored School, (Claiborne Calloway Elementary), Carver High School, Dayton, TN, Morristown College, Morristown, TN, and A&I State University. She graduated with a Business Degree. She taught at Carver High School until integration in 1965. She moved to Dallas, TX and became a Computer Operator for Texas Instruments. She retired from Texas Instruments in 1998.
