Maurice Joseph Bates' Obituary
The much beloved husband, father and grandfather, Maurice Joseph Bates, age 89, of Dallas, Texas, passed away on February 5, 2020, at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas.
Joe, as he was known to his friends and family, was born In Yale, Iowa on February 1, 1931 to Dr. Maurice T. and Margaret Sinnott Bates. He went to St. Augustine Grammar School and attended Dowling High School, both in Des Moines, Iowa. He continued his education and graduated from the University of Notre Dame and Georgetown Law School. He married the love of his life, Jane Ann Jackson, on December 27, 1952 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Fresh out of law school, he worked as an attorney for Standard Oil of New Jersey and the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C. prior to going into private practice in Dallas, TX in 1963. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the United States Marine Corp. where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He was an active member of the Notre Dame Club of Dallas, The City Club, The Serra Club of Dallas, Northwood Country Club and St. Rita Catholic Church where he served as a Lay Eucharistic Minister. Joe was an avid lover of baseball and all sports and a lifelong golfer. His greatest joys were spending time with his family and working in his church.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Mary, and his grandson, Matthew Joseph Locke. He is survived by his wife, Jane Jackson Bates, his daughter, Elizabeth Bates Locke and her husband, Claude Locke III, and granddaughter, Rebecca Catherine Locke, daughter, Catherine Bates DeWald and his sons, Thomas Joseph Bates and John Stephen Bates.
Rosary will be said at The Tradition, 15250 Prestonwood Blvd., Dallas, TX, 75248 on Sunday, February 23 at 3 PM with a reception to follow.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Monday, February 24, 2020 at St. Rita Catholic Church, 12520 Inwood Rd., Dallas, TX 75244. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to The Serra Club of Dallas, P.O. Box 600107, Dallas, TX 75360
