REYES, JR., MELQUIADES “SONNY” “MEL” born February 10, 1945 in Fort Morgan, Colorado, and passed away August 28, 2012 in Garland, TX. Mel was the third oldest child in a family of nine siblings. His family moved to Denver shortly thereafter. He attended and graduated North High School in 1963. He met and fell in love with Lenora Mansanarez in 1965 when he was 19 years old. She was 17 years old.The same year that Mel began dating his soon to be wife, he was drafted into the Army with a rank of Private First Class. He reported to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri on September 27, 1965, and served in Orleans, France during the Vietnam war. He was honorably discharged with the rank Buck Sergeant in 1967. Mel and Lenora were married one year later on October 26, 1968. They began their family in 1969 when their first of four daughters was born. Their last daughter would not be born until 1990. Mel had a long career with the US Postal Service where he was a mail carrier for 33 years. He retired from the USPS in 2001, one year after having moved to Garland, Texas to be near his three oldest daughters. During his time with the US Postal Service he attended night school for two years where he received his Associates Degree in computer programming.Upon their arrival in Texas, Mel and Lenora were overjoyed to discover they would soon become grandparents. Their granddaughter was born the same year they moved to Texas in 2000. Mel embraced his role as grandfather and shared many wonderful memories and teachable moments with his granddaughter.Mel was the type of man who never met a stranger. He was loved by everyone he met. He was a man of great character who never saw a flaw in a person, he saw only the person. He loved to laugh, loved life, and loved people. He was a true example of a servant, and was devoted and faithful to God till his last breath. He was a faithful and loving husband, father, brother, and friend. He will be missed greatly. Melquiades is preceded in death by father, Rev. Melquiades C. Reyes, Sr. and mother Margaret. He is survived by his wife, Lenora Reyes; daughters, Glenda Gonzales, Brenda, Melaine and Jadeen Reyes; granddaughter, Hannah Gonzales; brothers, Steve, and David Reyes; sister’s, Rachael Moyers, Louise Luna, Esther Martinez, Alice Padilla, Helen Garrison, Deborah Reyes- McDermaid. Family will receive friends on Monday, September 3, 2012 from 6:00 P.M to 8:00 P.M at Restland Funeral Home. Service will be held on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at 7:00 P.M at Christian World Church, 891 Abrams Road, Richardson, Texas.
