Melvin Elliott Brewer's Obituary
Brewer, Melvin Elloitt age 91 of Denton, Texas, formerly a lifetime resident of Dallas, Texas, went to be with his Savior on April 6, 2014. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Loma Roselle (Winkie) Morrow Brewer. Mel was born on May 20, 1922 in Dallas, Texas, the son of Ernest M. Brewer and Effie Mae Waggoner Brewer. He is survived by his three children, Maribeth Brewer Koch and husband, Harry of Denton, Texas; Tom Brewer of Denton, Texas and Becky Brewer of Dallas, Texas; eight grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. Mr. Brewer, along with his wife and two other couples, was the founder of Sky Ranch, a Christian children’s camp, with locations near Van, Texas, Northeastern Oklahoma and Western Colorado. He was the author of a book about its founding, and one about his beloved Winkie. He attended public schools in Grand Prairie, Irving and Dallas, graduating as valedictorian from Dallas Technical High School in 1940. He attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago before enlisting in the U. S. Navy Seabees during World War II, serving on Guadalcanal in the South Pacific, and in the Navy for three years. He graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1949 and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1950. He was a life member of the Texas Society of CPAs and its Dallas Chapter; a former member of the American Institute of CPAs, and former Chairman of the Dallas Chapter and Region II of the Texas Association of Business; and a past director of the Addison Business Association and the Metrocrest Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Brewer was a long time deacon at the First Baptist Church in Dallas, and a Trustee of the Dallas Life Foundation. At the time of his death, he was an active member of First Baptist Church, Denton, Texas. He also had a lengthy interest in Genealogy, and was a member and past director of the Dallas Genealogical Society and the Denton County Genealogical Society. He has published three genealogy books about his and his wife’s families. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, April 11, 2014 at Restland Funeral Home. Services will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Restland Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow in Restland Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sky Ranch, 24657 County Road 448, Van, Texas 75790 or Young Life, P.O. Box 520, Colorado Springs, CO 80901.
