Melvin Ray Currey's Obituary
Ray Currey, who never answered to his given first name, “Melvin”, went to be with the Lord and fittingly rested from his labors on Labor Day, September 1, 2025. He was a great father, husband, grandfather, friend and servant of the Lord.
He was born in Faxon, Oklahoma to parents Orvell H. Currey and Myrtle M. Currey, and grew up in nearby Lawton, Oklahoma. He attended Abilene Christian College (now University) upon graduating from Lawton High School and was the first in his family to receive a college degree. After college, he lived and worked in Lawton and Los Angeles, CA and enlisted in the United States Army, serving at various posts in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana. He later settled in Dallas, Texas, which was to become his home and where he began working in the nascent computer industry as a salesman. He also began attending Preston Road Church of Christ, where he met his wife, Cathie, and was married to her in 1970. The Preston Road church was to become a very important part of the rest of his life.
In 1975, he became a father with the birth of his son, Brad, and was a great role model of selfless devotion, sacrifice, and faith in action to his family. He relished talking to people and always made time for them, and was known to have long conversations with people he had just met. He loved being around dogs, and enjoyed owning and showing Arabian horses during his life. As a lifelong fan of the Oklahoma Sooners and baseball, he enjoyed watching sports of all kinds, especially baseball games of his family and friends. After a career in computer sales, he became an entrepreneur in 1989, starting Questechnology Corp., an outsourced computer service and support company which he later sold in 2003. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Cathie, his family, and as part of a broader travel group in retirement.
He was a committed Christian all his life, and gave generously of his time, money, and talents to advance the cause of Christ via various mission efforts and ministries. He exemplified his faith in how he treated everyone with whom he came in contact, and the integrity with which he lived his life. He was an active member of the Preston Road church for all of his time living in Dallas and served as a deacon and elder there for nearly thirty years. He served as a trustee for Dallas Christian School and later led the board as chairman. He served on the board of directors of ChristianWorks for Children for a number of years as well.
He will be remembered for his consistently kind, wise, friendly, and encouraging nature and his years of service to the church and other organizations to which he gave his time. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Cathie Currey; his son, Brad Currey and his wife Laura, his grandchildren Brynn and Cole Currey; his sister, Peggy Goodman; his nephews Kevin Goodman and his wife Cindy, Kyle Goodman, Larry Thomason and his wife Martha, Charles Thomason, and Phillip Thomason and his wife Lana; his nieces Judy Anderson and husband Rick, and Pam Parkin and husband Pat. He was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, Della Graham, parents Orvell and Myrtle Currey, sister Phyllis Thomason, brother-in-law, Lanny Goodman, and niece Kelley Peacock.
A graveside service will be held at Restland Cemetery in Dallas, Texas at 9AM on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, with a funeral and celebration of life to follow at Preston Road Church of Christ at 11:30 AM. Friends and family are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ray’s honor to New Life Behavior International, a missions organization that he supported, at https://www.newlifebehavior.org/partnership-opportunities.
