Melvin LaPoint's Obituary
Melvin La Point, fondly known by family as Mel, was born to Clodiese La Point and Velma Ruth (Rogers) La Point on July 11, 1949 in Beaumont, Texas. Melvin gave his life to Christ at an early age as a member of St. James United Methodist Church. He graduated from Hebert High School in May 1967 and furthered his education by receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Lamar University in May 1971. He married his late wife, Sherian (Love) La Point, on May 24, 1975, and to this union their only child, Christina, was born.
Melvin held a long and successful career, serving as a mail carrier at Vickery Post Office in Dallas for 35 years before retiring in 2018. A stickler for policies and procedures, as well as known for being fair, Melvin also held the position of union steward for several years. Upon retirement, he received the Most Dedicated Postman award. He previously worked as a tax enforcement officer and as assistant manager for a department store.
Business-minded, Melvin upgraded his childhood home and other family properties to rent and maintain as a family legacy. An avid hobbyist, he enjoyed adding to his stamp, coin, and magazine collections. With a penchant for a sweet tooth, he was known to indulge in Blue Bell ice cream and German chocolate cake, his favorite dessert. Watching Monday Night Football brought pleasure as he cheered on his team, the Dallas Cowboys. He adored his grandchildren, Christopher and Mattilyn, attending birthday parties, school and extracurricular events or just watching television and playing games together. A good and faithful servant, Melvin was a member of St. Luke ‘Community’ United Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas.
Although Melvin could be stubborn and “stuck in his ways,” he had a generous heart, a wonderful sense of humor, and a warm and engaging smile for all he encountered. He had a quiet, steady strength, carried himself with dignity, was loyal and a fierce protector.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sherian (Love) La Point; father, Clodiese La Point; mother Velma Ruth (Rogers) La Point; sister Geraldine (La Point) Jenkins; brother Roland La Point; nephew Willie A. Jenkins, Jr.; niece Roquisha (La Point) Norman; and son-in-law Antone Erve.
Melvin transitioned on June 11, 2023 in Grand Prairie, Texas after a battle with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Christina LaPoint Erve; grandson Christopher Erve; granddaughter Mattilyn Erve; as well as countless extended family members and friends. All held him in the highest regard and loved him dearly.
