Michael Ray Claunch's Obituary
Michael Ray Claunch was born in Dallas in 1960. Passed away only a few days after he turned 53. His parents were Larry and Genell Claunch. He is survived by stepmother Mary; brother Phillip and mother Genell. Michael was a very busy child and active in sports. He attended the Notre Dame School for the Mentally Handicapped. He began playing various sports in Special Olympics in the 70’s and enjoyed playing softball, tennis, basketball, swimming, bowling and volleyball. He excelled in softball and in 1995 he participated in the International Special Olympics in New Haven, Connecticut. Sports occupied his interest most of his life. In 1978 he was the first resident to move into the new program, AFIL (Association for Independent Living) started by a group of parents with children of special needs. He continued in the program until 2006. He then moved into an assisted living program. Michael was very friendly and talkative and never met a stranger. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to SLIL in c/o Tom Dearing at 901 Waterfall Way Ste. 205, Richardson, Tx 75080. Visitation will be from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Friday, April 19, 2013 at Restland Funeral Home. Service will be held Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Restland Abbey Chapel.
