Dr. Michael Wayne Cronholm's Obituary
Michael Wayne Cronholm age 71, of Dallas, Texas passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2023. Mike was born February 20,1951 at Florence Nightingale Hospital in Dallas, Texas. Raised in Dallas, Mike attended Lake Highlands High school graduating in 1969. Mike was raised in the Disciples of Christ church and was baptized at age 9. While growing up Mike always enjoyed participating in the youth groups at church and Young Life.
Mike started playing football at Bonham Elementary and continued through High school. He also loved competing in track events from elementary through college. He excelled in hurdles setting many records. He loved his high school coach Jackie Russell and maintained a relationship with him through the years. Being an outstanding hurdler on the track team, Mike was courted by many major universities. He decided on Rice University because of the high academic standards and the closeness to family.
He received a full scholarship for track from Rice and won many 1st places in the 440-yard hurdles, they include Kansas Relays, Drake relays and Texas relays. Mike won the Southwest Conference 3 consecutive years in a row. He also participated in the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon in 1972.
Upon college graduation in 1973, Mike worked at the Harris County Youth Village in Seabrook to contemplate his future. Being an excellent student in biology and science, Mike decided to apply for medical school.
In 1978 Mike Graduated from UT Southwestern Medical school with a degree in Internal Medicine but found he loved Emergency Room work. Working at Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, Mike enjoyed the challenges that walked through the door daily. Then he transferred to Presbyterian Plano Hospital where he worked many years and became Medical Staff President in 1995 and later retired there.
Mike enjoyed travel visiting Mexico and Europe. He went on trips with his brother Greg during his college years to Vera Cruz, Mexico City and Acapulco. While in Mexico, Mike spent time collecting butterflies, an interest he had developed at a young age on field trips with his grandfather Joe Maggs. Mike enjoyed gardening; a hobby encouraged by his grandfather. Mike also loved the outdoors: hunting, fishing, skiing, hiking and camping were all of his passions. His love of hunting was inspired by his dad who took him on hunting trips at a very young age. He went on many camping trips with his son Trenton while in Indian Guides. The Eastland lease was a very special place for him.
Mike is survived by a son, Trenton Cronholm and two siblings and their spouses: Yvonne Cronholm Scott and husband Larry of Mount Vernon, Texas and Greg Cronholm and wife Rita of Plainview, Texas. Nieces: Brittany Scott Puryear and husband Andrew of Dallas, Texas; Marie Cronholm and husband Dr. Adam Shephard of Vienna, Austria; Catherine Cronholm and nephew Jay Scott and wife Kristen from Mount Vernon, Texas. Also, 4 great nieces: Liv, Gable, and Sloan Scott; Lilly and great nephew Nolan Puryear.
Mike was preceded in death by his father and mother Carl and Ethelmarie Cronholm.
Mike will be missed by his family and his many friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2023, at 2:00pm. Visitation will be from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. Both will be held in the Memorial Chapel, located at Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park - 13005 Greenville Ave., Dallas, Texas 75243
