Michael Evans O'Hern's Obituary
Michael Evans O’Hern of Garland, Texas, passed away suddenly on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at home. He was born on September 6, 1958 in Odessa, Texas to John Larkin O’Hern and Mary Jane McAnally O’Hern. He graduated from Odessa High School in 1977 and West Texas State University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. While in college, he performed for several seasons in the outdoor musical TEXAS. Michael was employed by the Richardson Independent School District for 30 years as a Choir Director, most recently at Lake Highlands High School where he served for 15 years. He was named one of Texas’ Top Ten Teachers in 2001. He was President of the Texas Choral Directors Association from 2003 to 2005 and was awarded TCDA’s Choral Excellence Award in 2011. During his career, his choirs performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and at numerous Texas Music Educators Association conferences. Michael will be remembered by his brother, John L. O’Hern of Houston, his nieces, Emily E. O’Hern of Houston and Erin E. O’Hern of Sugar Land and his many friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, James B. O’Hern. He will be sorely missed. Visitation for Michael O’Hern will be from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm 0n Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Restland Funeral Home. Service for Michael will be at 2:00 pm on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration. Burial will be at 3:00 pm on Friday, March 11 at Sunset Memorial Park in Odessa, Texas. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, TX 75243. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Michael’s favorite charity, The John Stallings Memorial Scholarship Fund at Lake Highlands High School, 9449 Church Road, Dallas, TX 75238.
