I first met Mick when we both worked in the Irish Revenue Commissioners in 1977 and we became close friends. I spent a lot of time trying to convince him to join our soccer team in work, but he always said he wouldn’t be up to our standard. When he finally relented, it turned out he was a very decent defender. He later admitted he had resisted playing because he feared we would all laugh at his skinny white legs.
In 1981, we both accepted jobs at the same company in the US. I went back to Ireland for a few years, but we never lost touch. When my wife, Helen, and I permanently moved to the US in 1993 Mick and Cindy (R.I.P.) were a great help getting us settled.
As the years passed, and the miles between us increased, we kept in contact mainly through long rambling phone conversations. He had a great memory for details and was always entertaining when reminiscing about the wild days of our youth. Usually, those conversations ended when he had to pick up a call from one of his many other friends. It’s hard to accept that those conversations have ceased forever, but I feel privileged to have known him and his admirable siblings and sons.
He will be missed greatly by so many people. Rest in peace Mick Sheehan.
