Micke Joe Smith's Obituary
Micke Joe Smith, M.D., Ph.D., lovingly known to many as Mick, passed away on July 3, 2024, at
T. Boone Pickens Center for Hospice Care in Dallas, TX. Mick married the love of his life, Linda
Lee Johnson, on August 15, 1998 in Jackson, TN. Since 2003 they called Sachse, TX home,
not just because of where the house was located, but because they were surrounded by many
neighbors and friends in the area who became family.
Born on October 16, 1947, in Memphis, TN to Perry and Mary Moore Smith, Mick showed a
passion for learning and helping others from early in life, leading him to earn a Ph.D. from
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and a medical degree from the University of Mississippi. His
years as a Family Practice Physician in Rome, GA, Savannah, TN, and Dallas, TX were marked
by his kindness and dedication to his patients.
His kindness extended beyond his professional life as he was known for his tender heart and
servant attitude within the local Celebrate Recovery community. He received transformational
support through the wisdom and encouragement of others, and became a leader and a listening
ear to many through this tight–knit Celebrate Recovery community in Dallas, and eventually throughout the world as Mick co-founded Recovery International that allowed for Christian based recovery resources to be broadcast into Iran and Turkey, and he assisted his dear friends, the Kinyanjui family, in establishing and growing Celebrate Recovery in Kenya. A highlight of his life was his recent trip to Kenya.
Mick's love for golf was also well-known among his friends, especially his golfing buddies Daryl
Greebon and Darrell Bye, with whom he shared countless memorable rounds, including his
often mentioned hole-in-one.
There are too many individuals to name who shared a special bond with Mick and Linda through
the years in Savannah and Dallas areas, but the family wishes to highlight Jeff and Lisa Hall,
who grew close with Mick and Linda when they moved into the Sachse neighborhood at the
same time, and who took special care of them through recent health struggles.
Mick leaves behind his son, Micah Smith (Amy) of Henderson, TN; his daughter, Emma Smith
(Jonathan Albright) of Memphis, TN; his step-son Shane Johnson (Leslie) of Fayetteville, AR;
four grandchildren, Ella, Jonah, Lydia and Nora Smith; and his brother Perry Smith (Brenda) of
Dallas.
In addition to his beloved wife Linda and his parents, he was preceded in death by twin brother
Ricke Smith and brother Ken Smith.
A visitation will be held on August 3, 2024 at 12:00 pm, at Willow Bend Church in Plano, TX,
followed by a memorial service at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to Celebrate Recovery through Willow Bend
