Mildred Horton Lacy's Obituary
Mildred Horton Lacy was born February 17, 1923, in Tyler, TX and passed away June 17, 2022, at the age of 99. Mildred was a true gift to all who knew her. She was Mimi to most of us and O’Mimi to her seven great grandchildren. “What we are is God’s gift to us. What we become is our gift to God.” “Those we love don’t walk away, they walk beside me every day, unseen and unheard, but always near, still loving, still missed and very dear.” “Lead, Follow or Get Out of My Way, I Will Not Be Stopped!” … quotes found in her pocket calendar.
As a young girl Mildred used a rail pass to travel from Ennis to Dallas since her dad worked for Southern Pacific Railroad. She would visit her older sisters Gerry and Virginia in Dallas on the weekends until she graduated from Ennis High. The Horton sisters always spent their Sundays at Oak Lawn Methodist Church. At age 16, Mildred’s first car was a Hudson and she drove until age 97. At age 17, she moved in with her sisters in Dallas. Movies were a nickel then and Horton sisters went often for entertainment. Mildred attended Draughon’s Business College and first worked for Southland Life Insurance and then MJ Delaney Company. She met and married Bill Wortham Lacy March 3, 1950.
Mildred loved to play bridge with her bridge club. She was also an avid golfer earning many trophies and accolades at Brookhaven Country Club where she and Bill were life members. Family travel trips to Pensacola Beach and Crested Butte were her favorites. But she also loved New Orleans and San Antonio, too. She was life member of the PTA always supporting her children and others. She was the financial planner for the family, keenly interested in the stock market and investments. She was sharp as a whip up until her passing. She was an active member of the DAR Nancy Horton Davis Chapter.
She was preceded in death by husband Billy Wortham Lacy and her sisters Virginia Hemphill, Geraldine Brinkerhoff.
