Millie Pearl Titus' Obituary
Millie Pearl Campbell Titus was born on May 6, 1921. She passed away at the age of 102 on August 25, 2023.
Millie Pearl Titus was born May 6, 1921, in Fairfield, Texas, to the late Rev. James David Campbell Sr. and the late Mozelle Thompson. She departed this life on Friday, August 25, 2023, and was preceded in death by her only child, Artis Lee Pitts, and siblings, Rev. James David Campbell Jr., Mary Clemon, Elector Gaston, Leonell Mullens, Dora Randle, Jack Sampson, Calvin Washington, and Morris J. Washington.
Mrs. Titus received her formal education in Fairfield. She united in matrimony to her long-time sweetheart, Mr. Walter Titus after he returned home from serving in the Army. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Dallas, Texas in the mid-70's, where Mrs. Titus remained until moving to Maryland in 2021. Mr. and Mrs. Titus were married for 48 years and reared a son, Artis Lee Pitts. Artis married his college sweetheart, Marion Faye, and together they had two daughters, Charmian and Erica.
Working as a beautician for quite some time, Mrs. Titus went on to work for the Urban League for over 20 years. Her next career move was with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). After this chapter of her career ended, Mrs. Titus did not stop working because she liked to remain busy. She began working at the polls during the local and national elections and volunteered at the Larry Johnson Recreation Center until March of 2020.
Always dressed to the nines, Mrs. Titus was a “jack of all trades” who loved to sew, cook, dress hair, play the piano, listen to music, and do all things related to arts & crafts. Known to socialize, she often hosted her neighborhood Homeowners Association meetings, where her delicious catfish was likely the most important item on the agenda. In fact, there were many products of Mrs. Titus’ kitchen that people loved; among them her famous teacakes that graced homes far and wide during the Christmas season.
While Mrs. Titus left a big impact wherever she went, perhaps her biggest impact was in church. She joined Sparks Chapel CME Church (now known as Porter Temple CME Church) in 1941 when she was around 20 years old. She donned multiple titles during her more than 75 years of service at Porter Temple, including, but likely not limited to: choir member; church secretary; missionary secretary and treasurer; Sunday School superintendent, treasurer and secretary; usher; and announcement clerk - a position where she proudly incorporated her wisdom-filled “Thought of the Week.” She was also heavily involved in the Youth Department, not only mentoring the youth, but teaching them to sew and cook.
Mrs. Titus leaves to cherish her memories, two grandchildren: Charmian Makell (Brian) and Erica Dyson (Clifton) of Maryland. She is also survived by two God children, Dwayne Traylor and Pamela Williams, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
