Miriam Louise Honnold's Obituary
Miriam was born in Pomona, California on February 3, 1927. Her Dad, Heber Clewett, taught geology and physics at a nearby boy’s college. Her Mom, Thelma Clewett, was a stay at home Mom. Miriam was a daddy’s girl and a bit of a Tom-boy as she had 2 older brothers, Heber Jr. and Kenny. Although her parents were focused on education, Miriam enjoyed the special times spent outdoors with her Dad and brothers camping or picking fresh fruit in the many orchards of southern California. Unsure of what she wanted to do, she enrolled at UCLA, but in her junior year {at 22 years old) decided she wanted to see the world. She quit UCLA, was flown to Washington D.C. to train, then took off to Europe employed by the State Department. She was stationed in Berlin, Germany-where she became fluent in German and traveled throughout Europe when off work. Travel became her passion. As children we often poured over mounds of black and white pictures of her adventures in the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany….In Berlin, Miriam met her first husband, Raymond L Dabney- a Lieutenant in the army, working on theater sets where they deprogrammed the communist youth. They married and lived in Berlin for 5 years before returning to Ray’s home, Texas. She had 2 children – Kimelle {Kim) and Mitzie {Michelle). They moved to Dallas in the early S0’s for Ray’s work as a hospital administrator. When the kids were grown, Miriam went back to school to get her teaching degree. Miriam loved teaching, brought her artistic flare to all the bulletin boards, and touched the lives of many children over 20 years. As sometimes happens, she and Ray had an amicable split and she aimed her energy toward working on a Masters Degree in Liberal Arts at SMU. She published some papers at SMU, writing of her escapades in Europe. Not long after graduating SMU, Miriam met the second love of her life and who she believed was her soul mate, David E. Honnold. David was an accomplished, international, Petroleum Engineer. Miriam was blessed with two more children from David’s previous marriage – Sira and Erika. Sira and Erika both married and then gave Miriam the grandchildren she had always hoped for- Michael William, David William, John Michael and Sarah Ann.Besides her husband, children and grandchildren – Miriam had a second love – Dogs. Dogs of any shape, size, breed. She would have loved to have been a dog trainer and gave often to the SPCA. The rest of her years she spent doting on her white furry pets and was often seen taking long walks, stopping to chat with other dog lovers.Miriam fought a debilitating vascular disease for the past 4 years – battling it with courage and grace until her death. She was able to tell all of her children that she loved them in her final days and give out plenty of love-felt hugs to all who knew her, helped her and loved her as well. She will be missed by many.
