Dr. Mohini Taro Gehani's Obituary
Dr. Mohini Gehani, a physician and mother, passed away on May 1, 2025, in Dallas, Texas, from complications of cardiac arrest. Mrs. Gehani lived in the Washington, DC Area for 53 years and was a fixture in that community. Born in what was then called Karachi, India, in 1942, Mrs. Gehani was raised in difficult circumstances during the politically tumultuous time of India’s Partition. In 1948, she fled Karachi with her family as refugees, settling in Mumbai. Mrs. Gehani’s parents were not highly educated, but through her own determination and hard work, she graduated as a medical doctor from Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College in Mumbai. She served the Washington DC community as an anesthesiologist at DC General Hospital and other medical facilities for 45 years. Somehow, she also had fresh-cooked food ready nearly every day for her family and took her kids to most of their activities. She was a wonderful cook who never tired of making fresh food from scratch and sincerely nourish others' with her food. She embraced a full and meaningful life outside of work, marked by travel, close friendships, Hindu spiritual practice, and the deep love she had for her children. She twice had the privilege of volunteering on medical mission trips to rural India.
A strong-minded woman, Mrs. Gehani faced challenges head-on, whether managing home repairs, navigating her health struggles, or handling her financial affairs. In her last 15 years, she really enjoyed attending fitness classes at the local community center and the friendships she made there. Like her husband, she believed that travel was the greatest way to experience other cultures first-hand. Throughout her 60s and 70s, she did not miss the opportunity to take an annual trip with friends and family. She had the great fortune to visit many wonderful places with her travel companions, including China, Costa Rica, Israel, and Scandinavia.
She stayed close with her siblings, talking to her sister and brothers regularly, and pitching in with a helping hand wherever she could. Her family of origin gave her joy, and her memories of growing up with them were only positive. During their formative years, she took her children to India for 3 full Summers and one winter break, allowing them to live with her family and learn about their cultural roots firsthand. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Arti Gehani; her son, Mahesh Gehani; her grandchildren, Nithya, Somya, and Karthik Gehani; and her sister and brother in India, Rekha Mehta and Shiva Sadani
