Lit a candle in memory of Nelda Ruth Gentsch
"Ms Gentsch" ..is the only way i knew her.. I was a student at Southgate Elementary School from Kindergarten through 5th grade… 75-81 .. I just wanted to take a moment to give my respects and pay tribute to a truly awesome lady. She was epitome to the term "principal" .. and she is what and who I envision as what a principal should be. She was always so sweet to me throughout my young grade school life. And I was not the most conforming of students to say the least…. I wasn't bad.. but I was just a highly energetic child and required a little direction. And Ms Gentsch was way more tolerant than she had to be. I am but only one of countless lives that she impacted and still feel her influence today as a 45 yr old man. I know we mattered to her…i had run into her at the Library in downtown Garland at least 8-10 years ago…And she still remembered me.. and she remembered my family, she remembered little things that she could have forgotten and understandably so… But Ms Gentsch remembered things that I, myself had forgotten… We conversed there for maybe half an hour or longer.. Reflecting on fond memories from days long gone… As I said.. I was just one person that she affected.. There are many many others that are not aware of her passing. I think I can speak for hundreds of other children who are now grown adults that can say Ms Gentsch was a great lady who I always had the utmost respect for. She will be missed by many.. My heart and prayers go out to her family.. Please forgive my belated tribute to her here… But she will be missed..
Mrs. Gentsch was my principal at Southgate Elementary from K-5 during '78-83. I remember her always smiling, and being friendly with all who crossed her path. i saw her once when i was in high school at South Garland and she remembered me and called me by name. i can still hear her voice in my mind saying, "May I have your attention please? May I have your attention for the morning announcements?" =) she was a calming presence & i have the utmost respect for her. thank you, Mrs. Gentsch. belated condolences to her family and all who loved her.
Dear Donna & family, I thought of you today as I read Psalm 116:15,"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints…" My heart goes out to you at the loss of your precious mother. Nelda will be greatly missed at FBC for her tireless and faithful service. Love, Kay
You have impacted the lives of so many children, especially mine… Thank you so much for all you have done. You were truly an angel among us when we were children. Now it is your calling to be the real thing. You will be missed very much.
Nelda became one of the first women to become a principal and was an excellent role model for women teachers. When I became an elementary principal, we became even closer friends. I remember our great trip together as delegates to the National Elem. Principals Convention held in Washington, D.C. plus our extended days to tour Williamsburg and Monticello. Porter and I extend our sympathy to the family and pray for God to provide his comfort and serenity.
