Norma Cavazos' Obituary
Norma Louise Cavazos passed away July 14, 2024, peacefully and with family by her side. A caring and loving person to everyone she met, she will be missed deeply and remembered always.
Norma was born November 25, 1952 to Ophelia and Fernando Cavazos in Fort Worth, TX. The family moved back to Dallas during her childhood where she had a large circle of neighborhood friends and school friends. She also studied dance and piano.
In 1964, at the height of Beatlemania, she became one of the fortunate few to attend the Beatles performance in Dallas which began her lifelong love of the Fab Four.
She attended Lake Highlands Jr High and Lake Highlands High School, graduating with honors in 1971. She then attended the University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a degree in Journalism.
While at Austin, she wrote for the school paper The Daily Texan, made new friendships, attended Longhorn football games, enjoyed the beautiful hills, lakes and parks and attended many live shows of the burgeoning Austin music scene such as Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Van Morrison.
After graduation, back in Dallas, she worked for the March of Dimes before beginning her almost 40 year career with The Dallas Morning News, first in the research department then as TV Guide editor, then in Arts and Entertainment where she helped put together The Guide section of the Friday paper. Her last contributions were the listings of MLB All-Star game events at Globe Life Park. Over the years the friendships she enjoyed, the wonderful work environment she was a part of and the commitment to excellence she strove to maintain were a great source of pride and satisfaction.
Whether eating out at her favorite Tex-Mex restaurants, including her father’s Casa Cavazos, attending a Paul McCartney or Jimmy Buffet concert or traveling on a vacation trip, Norma lived her life to the fullest, always surrounded by friends and family. Birthdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas were special times as she would help prepare delicious meals for everyone and then talk, laugh (and eat) for hours. Loved by so many for her sweetness, her sense of humor, her kindness, her intelligence (before GOOGLE there was NORMA, who somehow always had the answer to everything); we are all heartbroken to have lost her, but so fortunate and so blessed to have known her.
Preceded in Death by mother Ophelia and father Fernando. Survived by her sister Helen Levy and brother Fred and his wife Telma, Uncle Edward Gamez and wife Suzi Gamez, nephews Jacob Levy and his wife Kerin, Michael Levy and his wife Anna, Marko, Fernando and John Cavazos, grandnieces Madeleine Moehling, Lauren and Kaitlyn Levy and by cousins too numerous to mention but each one loved so very much.
A memorial service will be held at Restland's Memorial Chapel 13005 Greenville Ave. Dallas, TX 75243 on Thursday August 1st at 10am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
