Norma Jean Legg's Obituary
Legg, Norma Jean Eden passed away into our loving Lord’s arms on Wednesday, May 12th in Dallas, Texas. She was born to Norman Bradley and Marjorie Vermelle Eden on December 20, 1928 in Sentinel, Oklahoma. When she was 7 years old, the Edens moved to Kaufman, Texas where Jean attended school. She graduated from Kaufman High School before heading to Texas Christian University. As a child, she won many awards singing around the area. She married Reagan Houston Legg in 1949 and they headed west from Kaufman to start their new life together in Midland, Texas, where Mr. Legg was an attorney, and where they reared their four children. In Midland, Jean served as an officer in the Junior League of Midland, the Garden Club, and the Study Club and was president of the Midland Law Wives. She was Chairman of Democratic Women of Midland County and was named one of the Outstanding Democratic Women in Texas. She also served in the Midland elementary, Junior High and High school PTA organizations. She volunteered with the Midland-Odessa Symphony Association and the Midland Community Theatre and was Hospitality Chairman for the Midland Symphony. She served as Chairman of Docents for the Museum of the Southwest and of the Children’s Dental Clinic and did organization work for several political campaigns both local and national. Jean also started the first Halfway House for Women in the state of Texas and was employed as Director for 19 counties for the Multiple Sclerosis Association while in Midland before moving to Dallas in 1976.
Dallas was Jean’s home for many years, and she gave back to the community in many ways. She was involved in the Junior League of Dallas, served on the Leadership Dallas Advisory Committee and was founder of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce Cultural Arts Committee. She worked on the Special Department of Justice Study Committee (Mediation Center), the Special Martin Luther King Center Committee. Jean was the Invitations Chairman for the First Mayor’s International Ball and Seminar Facilitator for The Arts Are Good Business. She also worked on the Parkland Hospital Bond Program and “Save Love Field”. She served on the Board of TACA, March of Dimes, Dallas Alliance, Executive Women of Dallas, Dallas County Republican Women and Who’s Who International. Her employment positions in Dallas included being Director of Goals for Dallas, Community Relations Director for Roger Meier Cadillac, Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Board at University Computing Company, Executive Assistant to the President at Langston Investments and Business Manager for Mrs. Elizabeth Smith. She retired in 1992 to be close to her parents.
Jean loved to travel and paint but what she loved most of all was spending time with her extended family, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her family was her love and she always made that known to all of them. Jean is survived by her son, John Legg and daughter-in-law, Connie Legg of Flower Mound, Texas; her daughter, Ellen Jackson and son-in-law, Leslie Jackson of Dallas; daughter, Emily Anderson and son-in-law, Michael Anderson of Dallas; son, Houston Legg and Mckenzie Best of Highland Village and grandchildren, Ashley Bowden, Lindsey and Tre Struble; Lauren and Michael Drinkwater; Zachary Legg and Alex and Chad Gentle. Jean also had 7 great-grandchildren who made her face light up every time she heard their names.
A family only Memorial Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Restland Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, May 26th. In lieu of flowers, send memorials to the charity of your choice.
