Norman David Owrey's Obituary
Norman David Owrey left this life peacefully and went to his eternal home in heaven on January 4, 2019. David was born Oct. 13, 1926 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Norman and Alma Owrey. He graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1948. After becoming ordained into the ministry at OBU, he often hitchhiked on weekends to preach at small country churches. He graduated from Southwest Medical School Dallas in 1953. In order to have extra income to pay for medical school, he sold Bibles door-to-door, and he also frequently donated his blood. That same year he graduated, he married Jean Almand Owrey. He completed an internship at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas, and then completed a four-year surgical residency. He also spent 16 months in military service in Seoul, Korea at the Swedish Red Cross Hospital. In 1961, David and Jean moved to Lawton, Oklahoma where he started a medical practice as a board-certified general surgeon. While in Lawton, he served as an active member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Lawton for thirty years. In 1991, David retired, and he and Jean moved to Plano, Texas to be near their family. That same year, they became members of the Agape Class at Prestonwood Baptist Church, where David served as class chaplain for twenty years. The Agape Class has proven to be a constant source of love and support for David and Jean, and the members in that class have become like family to them. David lived life to the fullest and was passionate about all he did. His many hobbies include making stained glass, hunting, fishing, golfing, aviation, writing poetry, and maintaining a beautiful greenhouse in his backyard where he exclusively grew orchids. He also published a weekly e-mail filled with jokes and silly stories that he called “Doc’s Humor Clinic.” He loved to make people laugh. David, who was known by many as “Doc,” was loved dearly by friends and family alike, and will be greatly missed. He will always be remembered for his positive spirit that came from his deep faith in the Lord, which was an inspiration to all who met him. David would be the first to agree that even though we sometimes face hard times, God is good. David’s survivors include his wife of 65 years, Jean, daughters Lynn Lessere and Jena Snyder and son-in-law Edward Snyder, and his sister Cherrie Shelton. He is also survived by his grandchildren Nick Lessere, Avery Lamse, Kyle Lamse, Amanda Albritton and her husband Justin Albritton, and great-grandchildren Jackson and Ace Albritton.Services will be held at Prestonwood Baptist Church on Friday, January 11, 2019. There will be a viewing and visitation with the family from 9:00 am-10:00 am in the Fireside Room, and the funeral service will be in the Faith Chapel at 10:00 am. Graveside services will follow immediately after at Restland Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
