Oda Fred Fanning's Obituary
FANNING, ODA FRED “MUTT”, born December 13, 1922 in Goodlett, Texas to Coy and Lucy Womack Fanning. He passed away on Friday, July 27, 2007 in Lafayette, LA.at the home of his daughter and son in law after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Eva Earlene Phillips, his parents, one brother Gerald Fanning of Childress, TX, and two sisters Ina Wilks of Amarillo, TX and Dorothy Elton of Grand Prairie, TX.. He is survived by three children, Donna Fanning Pelletier and her husband Dr. William Pelletier of Lafayette, LA, Gary Fanning and his wife Julie Heathcoat Fanning of Gurney, Ill, and Karen Fanning Sirran and her husband Greg Sirran of Tennessee, ten grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He moved to Dallas in 1942 where he worked as an instructor at North American before joining the Army in March of 1944. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign in World War II. He was a Scottish Rite 32nd degree Master Mason for 51 years with the Duck Creek Lodge and a member of the Elks Lodge. In 1962, he was awarded Father of the Year by a local Dallas Radio Station. He also worked for the Southland Corporation for many years before leaving to own and operate several drive in grocery stores in and around the Dallas area. He was the first to have a 7-11 that operated 24 hours and he had the first ever Icee machine in Dallas. Family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00pm, Monday, July 30 at Restland Funeral Home.
